How to set up your Smart Home

A step by step guide

New to smart home products?

A good place to begin is with one type of smart product, such as smart lighting or blinds. Our smart kits include everything you need to get started, and they’re ready to use straight out of the box. They make it easy to start small and gradually expand your setup as you become more confident.

If you're currently using the older Trådfri Gateway, switching to the DIRIGERA Hub is straightforward – it allows for an easy migration of all your existing smart products.

Your 4 Step Guide to setting up your smart home

STEP 1: DIRIGERA Hub

All About the Hub

The DIRIGERA Hub is the heart of any smart home. It allows you to connect and control your smart devices using the IKEA Home Smart app.

Imagine dimming the lights, raising the blinds, playing music, or even making a cup of coffee – all without leaving your bed. And the best part? No need to rewire your home.

The Technology Behind DIRIGERA

The DIRIGERA Hub is built on Matter technology – a smart home connectivity standard that IKEA has helped develop. Matter is IP-based and creates secure, reliable ecosystems for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

It’s designed to support a wide range of product types and scenarios, ensuring dependable performance, enhanced security, and broad compatibility. This means you can confidently add new products, knowing they'll work seamlessly with your existing setup.

Built-in Zigbee technology also ensures rapid response times and a highly stable connection.

How to get started with DIRIGERA hub and IKEA Home smart app

Good to Know:

The DIRIGERA Hub requires a Wi-Fi network and connects to your router using the cable provided.

You can connect an unlimited number of smart devices to the DIRIGERA Hub.

It supports easy migration – you can reset and add multiple devices at once, making it simple to move over from our previous Trådfri Gateway.

The DIRIGERA Hub is regularly updated free of charge, with new features and improvements to make your smart home experience even more enjoyable and convenient.

All of our smart products work on their own, but connecting them to the hub unlocks new ways to control and customise your home – including extra features when combining two or more devices.

STEP 2: Shop by category

Furnish your smart home with lighting, blinds, air purifiers and monitors, motion sensors, and speakers. With built-in technology that blends effortlessly with your style and décor, you might not even realise it’s smart!

STEP 3: IKEA Home Smart app

The IKEA Home Smart app is the heart of your smart home

With the IKEA Home Smart app downloaded on your phone or tablet, alongside the DIRIGERA Hub, you can easily manage your smart home by browsing through the different tabs.

The app allows you and everyone in your home to do tasks like checking if the lights were left on in the hallway, what level the air purifier is running on, and the name of the song that's playing in the bedroom speaker.

Navigating the app

Start with the 'home' tab - intuitive and easy to personalise with different colours and icons. From the home screen, you can create 'rooms' so that the app mirrors your home and can give you an overview of everything that's happening in your home.

In the 'all products' tab, you can see a total list of your smart products grouped by category. Here, you can move products from one 'room' to another, turn them on/off, and see if they need to be recharged or have the batteries replaced.

In 'scenes' you can create and run scenes and schedule timers. And in 'settings' you have quick access to How-Tos and support (if you need it!).

Good to Know:

Connect the IKEA Home Smart app to your voice assistant and control your home using your voice. Compatible with Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa.

Both the smart products and the app receive regular updates and continue to get even smarter – all free of charge.

Found the perfect combination of cosy mood lighting and your favourite romantic playlist? Or want all the lights and sockets to switch off when you leave the house? Simply save it as a ‘scene’ in the app.

Scenes can be triggered on a schedule or manually using one of our shortcut buttons.

STEP 4: Different ways to control your smart home

Remote Controls

Use a remote to operate a single product or control several at once as a group. With a shortcut button, you can combine different products into a ‘scene’ and manage them all with a single press.

Our remotes are simple to use – perfect for visiting friends and family. We even offer splashproof models, ideal for areas like the kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room.

Motion

Motion-triggered control adds comfort and a sense of security to your home. Use it to switch on the lights in dark areas – perfect for late-night trips to the bathroom – or in spots where your hands are often full, such as by the front door, in stairways, storage rooms, or laundry areas.

It’s also a great solution for wardrobes, automatically turning on built-in lights when you open the doors.

Voice

Control your smart products using just your voice – ideal when your hands are full or the room is dark. Works seamlessly with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri via integrations in the IKEA Home Smart app.

The app

As mentioned in Step 2, the app gives you full access to all your smart products, organised by ‘rooms’. You can add the rooms you want and personalise them with a name and a colour.

This way, the app mirrors your home, making it quick and easy to see what’s happening and stay in control.

Imagine a Home That Thinks for You

Picture a smart home that takes care of the little tasks you do each morning – like raising the blinds or playing your favourite playlist. Connected devices don’t just make life easier, they make it better. And the best part? It can all begin at IKEA.

What Is a Smart Home?

A smart home is a space equipped with connected devices – products you can control over the internet using your smartphone, tablet, or voice assistant.

Take our SYMFONISK collection, for instance. Designed in collaboration with Sonos, it brings together home automation and style. The Wi-Fi-enabled lamp with built-in speaker delivers rich sound and soft lighting – all in one product. That’s one less cord, one less plug socket, and one less device to think about.

What Is a Smart Home Device?

A smart home device is any internet-connected product that can be controlled via a smartphone or virtual assistant. These devices are designed to simplify everyday tasks or provide useful information – all with the goal of making life more convenient.

How Do You Create a Smart Home?

Getting started with smart home technology is easier than you might think. The most important thing you’ll need is a strong Wi-Fi connection, as all smart devices rely on the internet to work. Once that’s in place, it’s just a matter of choosing and setting up the products that suit your lifestyle.
