The Fifty Year Story Behind The IVAR Shelf
Share
A plain wooden shelving unit has quietly become one of the most adaptable storage solutions around. Here is how IVAR went from overlooked oddity to a fixture in homes that need flexible, honest storage, including plenty in Malta and Gozo.
From forgotten stock to design favourite
Long before it had a name, this shelving unit was considered too plain for the showroom floor, tucked away among surplus furniture that had arrived almost by accident. One of IKEA's designers spotted it and recognised something the rest of the range lacked: honesty in the materials and construction. Placed beside polished furniture in richer woods, the plain shelf stood out precisely because it did not try to compete on looks. Its straightforward build meant it suited almost any home, regardless of taste or budget, and by the early 1970s it had earned a permanent place in the range, setting the stage for decades of popularity.

Solid wood that earns its keep
Part of the appeal lies in how the shelf is made. Built from solid wood, including smaller offcuts left over from larger furniture production, it makes thoughtful use of material rather than letting it go to waste. That construction also makes it remarkably hard to wear out, which matters in a home where shelving gets used daily for books, kitchenware or storage boxes. Over the decades the design has been tweaked and renamed several times before settling on IVAR, the name it has carried since the 1980s. The changes were small, mostly to the spacing of shelf holes, but enough to mark a new generation of the same dependable idea.

A shelf that adapts to the room
One reason IVAR has lasted is how willingly it takes on different roles. Left plain, it works well in a utility room or storage corner. Painted or combined with doors, it can sit comfortably in a living room or hallway. In Maltese homes, where apartments and townhouses often need storage that can flex between seasons, this adaptability counts for a great deal, whether that means extra shelving for summer beach gear or a tidy spot for winter blankets. The IVAR cabinet, IVAR cabinet with doors and IVAR folding table all build on the same simple system, letting a household mix open shelving with enclosed storage as needs change.
