Refresh Your Home For Autumn With Bold Colour

As the evenings draw in, a home does not need a full overhaul to feel new again. A few sharp colour choices and unexpected pairings can lift a room, and most of these updates fit easily into even the smallest Maltese apartment.

Let cushions do the heavy lifting

If the thought of redecorating feels like too much, start small. A stack of cushion covers in graphic black and white prints or sharp, clashing colours can change the entire mood of a sitting room without touching a single wall. It is a low-risk way to try a bolder look before committing to anything bigger, which matters in compact living rooms where every piece earns its place. Pile a few contrasting covers on a sofa or a chest of drawers and see how the whole space shifts around them.

A bedroom with more personality

Bedrooms in Malta often double as the quietest, coolest room in the house during the hot months, which makes them worth dressing well. Forget the usual rules about matching everything. Pair a boldly patterned duvet cover with solid pastel pillows for a combination that feels considered rather than chaotic. Layering different textiles this way brings warmth and character to the room through the cooler winter evenings, and it costs far less effort than repainting or buying new furniture.

Mismatched tableware with real character

A table set entirely in matching pieces is not the only way to do things. Clashing colours and patterns across plates, bowls and glasses give a dinner table an eclectic, lived-in feel. Build on tableware already at home and mix in pieces picked up from a Gozo flea market stall or inherited from family, letting each one stand out rather than blend in. It is an easy way to make everyday meals feel a little more festive as the weather turns cooler.

Storage that carries the colour scheme further

Once cushions and bedding have set the tone, furniture can echo it. A bedroom styled with bold block colours and graphic patterns works well alongside simple, practical storage such as IKEA's EKET cabinets, which come as single units or combinations with doors, drawers and open shelves. Their clean lines keep a compact bedroom feeling uncluttered while still leaving room for a confident colour palette to stand out against them.
