Turning A Rooftop Into A Proper Garden

Turning A Rooftop Into A Proper Garden

A flat roof or wide balcony can become a real garden with a bit of planning. Here is a practical way to break the space into zones, from windbreaks to seating, without overcomplicating things.

Start with shelter and solid flooring

Rooftops catch a lot of wind, and chances are neighbours overlook yours from somewhere, so begin by framing the space. Windshields and trellises cut the breeze and add a sense of privacy, and they become more useful once climbing plants fill them in over the season. For the ground itself, decking is a practical choice as it is easy to keep clean and helps water drain away properly, while a patch of artificial or real grass underfoot gives the area a proper garden feel rather than a bare terrace.

Once the frame is in place, think about what actually goes into it. Large, heavy pots and sturdy wooden planters stay put when the wind picks up, which matters more on a roof than at ground level. Group plants by what they need: delicate ones tucked into sheltered corners, herbs given the sunniest spot, and anything that can take a battering, such as berries, positioned where it can climb a trellis and catch the weather head on.

Keep tools tidy and water close at hand

A roof garden still needs somewhere to keep tools, pots and bags of soil, and a bench with storage underneath does that job neatly while doubling as extra seating. For composting, a sturdy reusable bag is enough to collect fallen leaves, weeds and spent soil, given an occasional turn to help it break down. Since many rooftops have no outdoor tap, it is worth leaving out a large basin to catch rainwater, so there is always something on hand for watering.

Make room to sit back and enjoy it

Once the growing is underway, leave space to actually use the garden. A comfortable lounge chair and a low box or small table for a coffee are all that is needed to turn a working rooftop into a place to unwind at the end of the day. It is a fitting final step for homes across Malta and Gozo, where a shaded, green corner above the rooftops makes the hottest months far more bearable.

A rooftop garden rarely comes together in one go, so build it up gradually and let it find its own rhythm over the seasons.
