After having managed cows for years first as a herdsman along the Great Trail of the Far West, and then as an estanciero across the plains of the Argentine Pampas, you now have to look after flocks of sheep. You are a runholder (rancher) who must make the family farm prosper, adapting it to new challenges at the dawn of the 20th century. To ensure that your business continues to prosper, also guaranteeing a future for your workers, you will have to purchase increasingly valuable sheep breeds, and decide whether to focus on your traditional strengths or whether to launch into business diversification. In the game, you move your runholder along the path and carry out local actions that will allow you to hire a worker, buy or shear sheep, invest in bonus tiles, place your own buildings, move your ship, ... The game mechanics reflect those of Great Western Trail, but include some new features including: – a different way to start the game for each player – a fourth worker: the sheep shearer – a new commodity to deliver: wool – various sets of Bonus cards in each game – bonuses that are unlocked by exploring the Pioneer track – half of the neutral buildings that change during the game – improved management and delivery phases – a new job market. Great Western Trail – New Zealand closes Alexander Pfister's renowned and appreciated trilogy.
